Summary
Allergic rhinitis is caused by an
abnormal immunologic reaction in which
immunoglobulin E binds to antigens such as
pollen, dust mite, pets or indoor molds. The
released inflammatory mediators cause early
symptoms like nasal discharge, pruritus
and sneezing. Many patients develop nasal
obstruction in a later phase. Often these
symptoms stay untreated and may impact the
patient’s quality of life and optimal functioning
(professional and personal). Treatment
consists of antihistaminica for early phase
reactions and intranasal corticosteroids.
Both are available without prescription
making guidance by the pharmacist
warranted. This article provides information
about the background, treatment and
follow-up of allergic rhinitis in a community
pharmacy setting.
Samenvatting
Allergische rhinitis is het gevolg van een
abnormale immunologische reactie waarbij
de patiënt immunoglobuline E aanmaakt
tegen allergenen zoals pollen, huisstofmijt,
dierenepitheel of schimmels. Als gevolg
van de vrijkomende ontstekingsfactoren
ontstaan vroege symptomen met
voornamelijk neusloop, jeuk en niezen. In
een latere fase treedt bij vele patiënten
ook neusverstopping op. Dikwijls blijven
deze symptomen onvoldoende tot zelfs
niet behandeld. De patiënt kan impact
ondervinden op zijn levenskwaliteit en het
optimaal functioneren, zowel op professioneel
als op persoonlijk vlak. De behandeling
bestaat voornamelijk uit antihistaminica,
die vooral doeltreffend zijn bij de vroege
symptomen en intranasale corticosteroïden.
Beide geneesmiddelenklassen zijn vrij van
voorschrift. Duiding door de apotheker is hier
zeker op zijn plaats. Dit artikel wil apothekers
de nodige informatie verschaffen over de
achtergrond, behandeling en opvolging
van allergische rhinitis.
